Lemons are one of the most cleansing, detoxifying foods we can consume. They are full of vitamins and minerals and help our bodies to become more alkaline. They are especially good for cleansing the liver, kidneys, and breaking up stagnated lymph fluid. They are anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, strong astringents, and carry a nutritional profile that provides a major boost to the immune system. In addition, lemons are cleansing to the entire gastrointestinal tract and the juice of lemons has been said to be molecularly similar to bile – a digestive fluid produced by the liver that is absolutely crucial in the digestive process.
The rind contains about 80% of the nutrients in the lemon, while the juice contains about 20%. For this reason, the recipe below calls for the entire lemon, including the rind and seeds
One of my favorite things about lemon peels is their vitamin C content. Humans lack the ability to produce vitamin C, so we must obtain it from exogenous sources. Vitamin C is important for so many functions in the body, but it is particularly important for those dealing with stress and adrenal insufficiency.
The highest concentration of vitamin C in the body is stored in the adrenal glands. Vitamin C is utilized in the production of all adrenal hormones, particularly cortisol. Therefore, under stress we rapidly deplete our stores of vitamin C in the production of cortisol and other stress-related hormones. Oddly enough, the lack of vitamin C can cause the adrenals to panic and call for the secretion of even more cortisol, compounding the problem. Those dealing with adrenal fatigue must feed their adrenal glands with sufficient amounts of vitamin C.
Lemon peels are rich in vitamins and minerals, help fight cancer cells, support bone health, are rich in bio-available vitamin C, boost the immune system, help kill parasites and worms, aid in weight reduction, contain antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties, help with acne, and a myriad of other benefits.
DETOXIFYING LEMON SMOOTHIE BASIC RECIPE
- 1 whole organic lemon (start with 1/4 lemon and work your way up)
- 1 fruit of choice (pear, mango, grapes, apple, strawberries, etc) This helps hold the smoothie together.
- 1-2 T raw honey or royal jelly (to taste)
- 1-2 cups water
Add all ingredients to blender (I prefer the Nutri-Ninja). Blend until smooth. Drink on an empty stomach, preferably first thing in the morning 45-60 minutes before breakfast. You can drink half in the morning and save the other half for mid afternoon, roughly 1-2 hours after eating. It’s recommended that you drink this smoothie through a straw – I personally use and love these.
It’s important that you use organic lemons, especially because you are consuming the peel and rind. This will reduce unwanted chemicals coming into your body.
This is a very detoxifying drink, especially if you choose to add some of the super foods below. Start slow and realize you may experience some detox reactions. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
SUPER FOOD ADDITIONS (OPTIONAL)
- 1 teas bee pollen (some need to start slow with just a few granules) – Excellent source of B vitamins
- 1-2 slices fresh ginger
- several sprigs of fresh parsley
- fresh dandelion leaves
- fresh spinach leaves
- fresh wheatgrass or wheatgrass powder
- superfood mix (I like this one)
- moringa leaf powder
- black-strap molasses
- aloe vera juice
Play around with this recipe and make it your own. There are no exact amounts or cookie cutter recipe. Listen to your body and change it up depending on what you need that day. If your body doesn’t agree with something listed above – omit it. Not all ingredients are for everyone.
